WHAT IS EARLY FRENCH IMMERSION?
The Early French Immersion program in the Abbotsford School District provides students with the opportunity to attain a high level of proficiency both in French and in English. The program runs from kindergarten to Grade 12, working towards a bilingual dogwood diploma upon graduation. Students build vocabulary across the content areas of the prescibed B.C. curriculum and continue to grow in their cultural and background knowledge of the language over their years in the program.
BUILDING FRENCH AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY:
Comprehension of spoken French develops first and then students begin to communicate spontaneously in French. Throughout the program, students continue to develop their French language and literacy skills in addition to developing their English language and literacy skills.
Formal instruction in English begins in Gr. 3, representing 20% of instruction time through Gr. 8. In Gr. 9-10, students have 50% of their coursework in French and in Gr. 11-12, 25% of their coursework is in French.
GRADE | % OF FRENCH INSTRUCTION |
K-2 | 100% |
3-8 | 80% |
9-10 | 50% |
11-12 | 25% |
