French Immersion

Immersion Curriculum
French immersion is an authorized alternative program. French Immersion teachers follow the prescribed learning outcomes outlined in the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum. Instruction is in French with the exception of English Language Arts beginning in Grade 3.


Time Allotment of French and English in the Immersion Program
The School District favors a French Immersion program which will ensure a strong French academic program for students in elementary and secondary schools. To achieve and maintain a high level of competency in French, both programs will have the following French-English component:

Early Immersion

I First three years (K to Gr.2) of Primary Program: 100% instruction in French

II Fourth Year Primary (Gr. 3) to Grade 5:
• 75% - 80% instruction in French
• 20% - 25% instruction in English Language Arts

III Grades 6 to 8:
• 20% instruction in English Language Arts
• Some explorations are taught in English
• Mathematics (Grade 8) are taught in English

IV Grades 9 to 10: Minimum of 37.5% (3 courses) instruction in French (French, Social Studies and CAPP)

V Grade 11: Minimum of 25% (2 courses) instruction in French (French and Social Studies)

VI Grade 12: Minimum of 12.5% (1 course) instruction in French (French)


Late Immersion
I Grade 6 Late immersion: All subjects in French except in Math, CAPP and some Explorations


II Grade 7 Late immersion: All subjects in French except in Math, CAPP and some Explorations


• Students in late French immersion and early immersion are integrated at the Grade 8 level.
