Holiday gift shops teach generosity, gratitude, and responsibility
Across the Abbotsford School District, many elementary schools bring holiday spirit to life by hosting school-based holiday gift shops. These temporary shops give students the opportunity to choose small, affordable gifts for their families while learning meaningful lessons about gratitude, empathy, and generosity.
Often led by student councils and supported by staff, PACs, and families, holiday gift shops are about much more than shopping. They create space for students to practise responsibility, think about others, and experience the joy of giving.
Learning through leadership and service
At Prince Charles Elementary, the holiday gift shop was organized by student council members for the first time. Inspired by a desire to teach gratitude and help classmates afford meaningful gifts for their families, students took on leadership roles with purpose and care.
The experience encouraged older students to model responsibility for younger peers, from giving up lunch hours to help run the shop to planning spirit days that created positive memories for everyone. Recycling initiatives and fundraising tied the project to community impact, with proceeds supporting the Cyrus Centre. Families also contributed generously by donating gifts, reinforcing a strong culture of care and participation within the school community.
Inclusive opportunities for every student
At Clearbrook Elementary, the holiday gift shop focuses on teaching the heart of gift-giving. Donations are collected throughout the year, ensuring that all students can participate, regardless of whether they are able to bring a toonie or not.
Funds raised support the school’s PAC, helping update gym and sports equipment. Now in its eighth year, the initiative continues to show how shared generosity can strengthen both learning environments and school spirit.
Keeping traditions alive
Despite the weather, Semá:th Elementary was glad to open its holiday gift shop this year, maintaining a cherished tradition that students and families look forward to each season.
Building community through giving
Holiday gift shops reflect the values many Abbotsford schools strive to nurture every day: kindness, responsibility, and connection to community. With the support of families, staff, and student leaders, these initiatives help students understand that even small acts of giving can make a meaningful difference.
Thanks to the contributors to our community who help make these experiences possible across our schools.
